I'm a backer! While not the first low-cost LIDAR system available on the market, it could turn out to be the first low-cost 2D LIDAR available for hobbyists and consumer products.

The sweep Scanning LIDAR from Scanse may turn out to be the low-cost 2D LIDAR solution for hobbyist and consumer robotics that we've all been waiting for.

Scanse Sweep LIDAR

According to their Kickstarter campaign:

Sweep is a scanning LiDAR sensor designed to bring powerful 360 degree sensing capabilities to everyone for an affordable price.

To that end, they've created a simple, but seemingly robust design for the device, reminiscent of the LIDAR using in the Neato XV series of consumer vacuum cleaner robots, optimized in size, scanning capability, and outdoor use.

Basic specifications include:

Full specs can be found in the datasheet, which can be downloaded here.

It's also designed to be modular - so that as capabilities for the sensor design improves, parts can be easily swapped out - you won't have to buy the entire sensor again, just the parts you need. Scanse has also created visualization software for Linux, Windows, and OS X, as well as libraries for ROS, the Raspberry Pi, and the Arduino - and are working to provide libraries for other platforms and languages as well.

Check it out, and consider supporting their campaign!
