I'm not sure, but I think this is an old Cox 049 control-line model airplane engine...

Old Cox 049?
Questions or Comments?

I know only a few things about this engine:

  1. I got it when I was a kid - I think I was in the 5th or 6th grade (around 1984-ish).
  2. It came from a Cox control line plane - a P-51 as I recall.
  3. I only salvaged the engine and fuel tank.
  4. Somewhere, I still have the propeller, but I have yet to find it.

It was given to me by a neighbor; I threw it in a drawer, and never really looked at it again. I managed to burn out the glow-plug using a battery when I was a kid, so last night I decided on a whim to see if I could get another. I have this crazy idea of using the engine and a DC motor to build a relatively small gen-set power plant, for possibly a hybrid power system for a future robot. Either that, or I have a couple of RC controllers that maybe I can use to build a plane or something.

I have a request for help to Cox International for help in identifying this engine; I'm pretty sure they have the parts for it, but I am not sure which to use, what to buy, etc - all of this is new territory for me, but they sent me a response to an email I sent late last night! I was pretty shocked that they would respond so quickly, on a weekend, and on a Sunday! Talk about great customer service!
